CHROME-MOLY RODS MADE FOR
IMPORT ENGINES
For decades, chrome-moly rods have been available for large V-8 engines. Now they are available for small-bore engines also. These rods ar use an I-beam style of construction, and are extremely strong. Most of our chrome-moly rods are made to order so be sure to allow plenty of time for delivery. It may take as long as eight weeks. Note the following features of these superb rods:
1. 4340 chrome-moly steel alloy material- this is an extremely strong aircraft alloy that will safely allow much higher revs than with stock steel rods.
2. Cross-grain flow - the rods are made so that the grain direction of the rod bodies is vertical while the grain direction of the caps is horizontal. This creates a "memory" in the rod that resists the tendency to form an elliptical housing after prolonged use, as occurs in stock rods.
3. I-beam construction - from an engineering viewpoint, this type of construction provides the greatest strength and the least weight. These rods are not only stronger than stock rods but are actually lighter.
4. Two-piece forging in closed dies - this technique increases the density of the steel and makes the rods even stronger.
5. Shot-peening - this is an old process that stress-relieves and reduces metal fatigue, which can cause twisting and bending with a stock rod.
6. Hi-strength rod bolts are included.
TITANIUM CONNECTING RODS:
Titanium connecting rods are not for everyone because of their high cost For those who want the ultimate in a racing connecting rod, however, titanium offers two outstanding advantages: It has approx 1/2 the weight of steel and twice the strength. For street machines, this won’t make much difference, but on race cars that operate above 6,000 RPM, the difference is startling. Above 8,000, the difference is mind-boggling.
The tremendous weight savings means that more power is passed through to the flywheel instead of expending it by thrashing heavy rods up and down. On a 300 HP engine, this can make a difference of 30 to 40 HP at high RPM --- plus they are stronger and more reliable! In addition to the inherent strength of forged titanium, these rods are also plated to totally remove any possible stress risers.
We are often asked why titanium parts are so expensive. The answer is that the raw material is slightly more expensive than silver and the machine work process is very slow, using up a lot of very expensive carbide tooling while it is done. The bad news is that the price is going to go higher. In addition to the military using up thousands of tons for their aircraft, the new civilian superjets use extraordinary amounts of titanium. Boeing's order of titanium for it's new 787 aircraft exceeded the entire 2005 world's production of the metal. The old law of supply and demand will have it's effect.
HOW TO ORDER CON RODS
:All rods are made up to order, and delivery time will be approximately six to eight weeks for chrome-moly or twelve to sixteen weeks for titanium, so give us enough lead time to do the job properly for you. If we do not have a pattern for rods for your particular engine, you will have to send an old stock rod in. Please call about this.
